1. Typologies and Wine grapes DOC Lessona

Lessona (Red Wine)
Versions: Dry
=> 85% Nebbiolo vine (Spanna)
= <15% Vines Vespolina and Rare Grapes (Bonarda Novarese), alone or jointly
=> 12% Vol. Alcoholic strength
Red wine with garnet red color, with orange nuances with aging, a characteristic scent reminiscent of violet, fine and intense, with a dry, pleasantly tannic flavor, with a characteristic sapidity and a pleasant, persistent aftertaste.
Lessona Riserva (Aged Red Wine)
Versions: Dry
=> 85% Nebbiolo vine (Spanna)
= <15% Vines Vespolina and Rare Grapes (Bonarda Novarese), alone or jointly
=> 12% Vol. Alcoholic strength
Aged Red wine with garnet red color, with orange nuances with aging, characteristic scent reminiscent of purple, fine and intense, with a dry, pleasantly tannic flavor, with characteristic sapidity and pleasant, persistent aftertaste.

2. Territory and area of ​​production of the Lessona DOC wine

The geographical area dedicated to the production of the Lessona DOC wine extends over the hills located in the western part of Alto Piemonte, in an area that is well ventilated, bright and conducive to the fulfillment of all the vegeto-productive functions of the vineyards.

The Lessona DOC Wine Production Area is located in:

province of Biella and includes the territory of the municipality of Lessona.

3. Vinification and refinement of the Lessona DOC wine

During the wine-making phases only the oenological and constant oenological practices of the area are permitted which confer to the wines their particular characteristics of quality.

The winemaking practices of the Wine DOC Lessona include, among other things:

The maximum yield of grapes in the Lessona DOC wine must not exceed 70%; if these parameters are exceeded within the limit of 5%, the excess can not be entitled to DOC. Beyond these limits the right to DOC for the whole product is lost.
The DOC wine Lessona must be aged for at least 22 months, 12 of which are made of wood.
The DOC Lessona Riserva wine must be aged for at least 46 months, 30 of which are made of wood.
Under certain conditions, the Lessona DOC wines can be reclassified in the DOC Coste della Sesia versions Rosso and Nebbiolo.
In the designation of the DOC wines Lessona the term “Vigna” may be mentioned provided that it is followed by the relative toponym and that certain vinification practices are respected.
On the labels of each type of DOC wine Lessona it is mandatory to report the vintage of production of the grapes.

With the use of the DOC Lessona the Piedmontese Wine Producers are proud to present to the consumer a Quality Wine that has more things to tell than others: where it comes from, how it is processed, the historical origins and the characteristics that identify it in a well defined territory that the enthusiast or the admirer will be able to better perceive and appreciate during the Visit to the Cellars that operate within this denomination.

6. History and Literature of the Wine DOC Lessona

Wine was already famous in the seventeenth century and there are numerous historical testimonies related to the potential of the territory. The state archives of the city of Biella in the many references to viticulture, already in 1436, recorded the purchase of a vineyard.

The DOC Wine Lessona obtained recognition of the Denomination of Controlled Origin on December 3, 1976.
